Bioluminescent Bay In La Parguera

The bio-luminescent bay (sometimes called ‘phosphorescent bay’ or bio-lagoon) in La Parguera is one of the highlights of any trip to southwest Puerto Rico. Located just off the coast near the town of Lajas and the area of Guanica, is the bio-luminescent bay at La Parguera. The lagoon is about a 20 minute boat ride from the docks at La Parguera, accessible by boat only. The bio-bay at La Parguera is one of the three natural bio-luminescent bays in Puerto Rico and one of only seven in the entire world.

Although bio-luminescence in the ocean is nothing new, the thing that makes the three bio-luminescent bays in Puerto Rico special is the fact that they have luminescence every day, year-round. In most areas of the world the luminescent effect is something that occurs only during special seasons or special circumstances.

You’ll find that the bio-bays and bio-lagoons in Puerto Rico are a great experience for the entire family. The warm, shallow waters in the bay make for a calm and surreal experience, as you swim among the glowing dinoflagellates.
