The Best “Alcapurrias” in Guayama

A torpedo-shaped fritter that’s normally sold at beachfront kiosks. Made with yuca or plantain, taro, and other starchy tubers are transformed into tamale-like pasteles, or they are grated, stuffed with meat, and fried to create an alcapurria.

But, have you ever heard of the dreaded Anaconda snake from South America? Well let me inform you that in Puerto Rico also exist, because our Puerto Rican cuisine has created a alcapurria named itself, “Anaconda”. Obviously because it is the biggest you can get in Puerto Rico.

Is a small kiosk located in the sector Pozuelo de Guayama, where they have created this already famous alcapurria that measures 24″. You can get stuffed meat, a mix of meat or jueyes (crab meat) from which you can easily eat up to 4 people.

El Fogón de Susa (Susa’s Stove) is the place to be. Located in Pozuelo, a small beach town in Guayama, PR. Is open from Friday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. When you get there, you will realize that it’s a waiting list of 1 hour for the specialty of the house, the famous Anaconda, so sit back and relax, because the wait if worth it.

How to get there:

From San Juan:
Take highway #52 south, until exit to Guayama #53. Then exit on Hwy #7707, passing the correctional facility, at the light, make a right. In a short distance, you will see the entrance to Pozuelo Hwy #7710

From Ponce:
Take highway #52 north, until exit to Guayama #53. Then exit on Hwy #7707, passing the correctional facility, at the light, make a right. In a short distance, you will see the entrance to Pozuelo Hwy #7710
