There’s no doubt that Puerto Rico is full of natural attractions, but one of the most impressive and not so explored are the Caves and Caverns of Puerto Rico. Here is a top 5 most amazing caves and caverns in Puerto Rico.

1. Cueva Ventana (The Window Cave)

Cueva Ventana (The Window Cave) is located in the municipality of Arecibo, Puerto Rico at street #10. The trail will allow you to enjoy the flora and fauna of the limestone zone of the north of Puerto Rico. This zone covers around 90 miles from Rio Grande to Aguadilla.

At the end of the trail you will walk down a ladder that leads to the main cave cavity, of some 20 feet. You will be delighted with the stalactites, stalagmites, bats and the bugs from this ecosystem.

The end of the cave, there is an impressive opening in the mountain, allowing an unforgettable vista towards the mountains of the area and “Rio Grande of Arecibo”; name of the cave comes from here.

When returning, after the stairs, you can walk down a slope to find another cave a little smaller, but very impressive. Here there is another opening in the mountain where hundreds of wanderers use the little holes in the cave to nest.

2. La Cueva del Indio (The Indian Cave)

“La Cueva del Indio” or The Indian Cave in Arecibo is located on Highway 681 Km 8.0. You can park in the side of the road, but for safety we recommend you pay $2 and park in the business The Coayuco. There is also a nearby gas station that has parking.

The cave entrance is labeled. At first the trail is between shrubs and after several minutes, the ground is limestone. You must be very careful because these rocks are sharp and are slippery when wet. The cave entrance is a hole in the limestone with a ladder about 25 feet down into it. Be cautious and do not go alone just in case something happens.

The cave is divided in several cavities. On some of them you will see petroglyphs and on others you will see how the waves move the level of the water as they come and go. These Indian petroglyphs date back to ancient times, but the exact date could not be determined accurately.

After appreciating the charms of the cave you can enjoy its surroundings, where you will see how the ocean waves crashing against the limestone rocks that eventually formed natural sculptures.

The admission is free and operated and maintain by the Department of Natural Resources of Puerto Rico.

3. Rio Camuy Cave Park

The Park of the Caverns of the Camuy River is one of the most spectacular places of Puerto Rico. It is the third greatest cave system in the world and at the moment 18 entrances have been discovered.

After enjoying a video, a trolley will take you to the entrance of the main cave, “Cueva Clara,” which is more than 170 feet high and has immense stalagmites and stalactites. During the tour the guides of the park will inform you about the ecosystem of the caverns in a jovial and friendly way.

At the end of the tour, the trolley stops at the “Sumidero Tres Pueblos,” a natural drain, where at the end you will see the Camuy River. In addition to its natural attractions, the park has picnic tables, a souvenir store and a cafeteria.

It opens from Wednesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., and the entrance fee is $18 per adult, $13 per child and seniors $9. The park is closed on: New Year, Three Kings Day, Good Friday, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

4. Cueva Del Viento (Wind Cave)

The Cueva del Viento or Wind Cave is at present the biggest cave of the Guajataca Forest. In order to get there you must request a map at the Ranger Station located at the entrance of the forest. It will take you like one hour to arrive at the cave.

It is a very impressive cave where you will see stalagmites, stalactites, columns and small animals. It is extremely long and if you wish to explore it you must bring a flashlight. Remember to be careful.

5. Cañón de Tanamá

The location for this adventure is the spectacular karst cave region between Arecibo and Utuado where, after hiking in a beautiful forest, you float down the Tanama River … rapids and all. This trip is challenging and exhilarating, and it will really get your heart pumping.

The karst region in the western part of Puerto Rico is simply amazing, and is totally different than the eastern part of the island around El Yunque. It is beautiful due to the haystack hills and canyons, created by natural forces over time. The Tanama River runs through the region, and it has carved out amazingly beautiful, lush green canyons, along with lots of caverns and caves.
